Target Information

Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins and major noncollagenous constituents of basement membranes. They play roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin effects are mediated through cell surface receptors including integrins and non-integrin laminin-binding proteins.

This gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin laminin receptor 1 (also known as 67 kD laminin receptor, 37 kD laminin receptor precursor, and p40 ribosome-associated protein). The amino acid sequence is highly conserved, indicating a key biological function. Elevated expression has been observed in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cell lines, correlating with invasive and metastatic phenotypes. Multiple pseudogene copies exist due to retropositional events. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
