Target Information

Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein (MACP) family. UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate the transfer of anions and protons across the mitochondrial inner and outer membranes, reducing membrane potential in mammalian cells.
UCPs contain three homologous protein domains of MACPs. SLC25A14 is expressed in many tissues, with the highest levels in brain and testis, and features an N-terminal hydrophobic domain absent in other UCPs. Two splice variants have been identified.
