UBE2G1 is a member of the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family, which plays a key role in the ubiquitination pathway — a major cellular mechanism for targeting abnormal or short-lived proteins for degradation. UBE2G1 shares 98–100% sequence identity with zebrafish, frog, rat, and mouse orthologs, indicating high evolutionary conservation among eukaryotes.
