Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS26 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein and is located adjacent to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone precursor gene.
