Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the serpin superfamily, specifically the ovalbumin-serpin subfamily. It was originally identified as a placental thrombin inhibitor. The mouse homolog is expressed in hair cells of the inner ear.
Mutations in this gene are linked to nonsyndromic progressive hearing loss, indicating its role in protecting inner ear cells from lysosomal leakage during stress. Loss of this protection can lead to cell death and sensorineural hearing loss.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
