Caspase 14은 세포자멸사(apoptosis)의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 하는 cysteine-aspartic acid protease(caspase) 계열 단백질을 암호화합니다. Caspases는 비활성 전구효소 형태로 존재하며, 보존된 아스파르트산 잔기에서 절단되어 활성 효소를 형성합니다. Caspase 8 및 Caspase 10에 의해 in vitro에서, 그리고 anti-Fas agonist antibody 또는 TNF-related apoptosis inducing ligand에 의해 in vivo에서 활성화되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Caspase 14의 발현과 가공은 각질세포의 최종 분화에 관여하며, 이는 피부 장벽 형성에 중요합니다.
