Target Information

Ubiquitin is a 76 amino acid, highly conserved eukaryotic polypeptide that selectively marks cellular proteins for proteolytic degradation by the 26S proteasome. This process regulates protein concentrations by limiting lifespans through polyubiquitination.
Modification steps include activation of ubiquitin (E1 enzyme), transfer to E2 conjugating enzyme, and covalent linkage to target proteins directly or via E3 ligase. Deubiquitination enzymes reverse this marking.
