This gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein that selectively induces apoptosis in cancer cells through intracellular and extracellular mechanisms.
- Intracellular mechanism: Inhibition of pro-survival pathways and activation of Fas-mediated apoptosis
- Extracellular mechanism: Binding of secreted form to glucose regulated protein 78 (GRP78) on the cell surface, activating the extrinsic apoptotic pathway
Located on human chromosome 12q21, often deleted or mutated in tumors. Plays a role in age-related disease progression.
