Target Information

The PCDHGC5 gene belongs to the protocadherin gamma gene cluster, one of three related clusters located on chromosome 5. These clusters exhibit an immunoglobulin-like organization, suggesting a unique regulatory mechanism.
The gamma gene cluster includes 22 genes divided into three subfamilies:

• Subfamily A: 12 genes
• Subfamily B: 7 genes and 2 pseudogenes
• Subfamily C: 3 genes

Each variable region exon encodes the extracellular region containing six cadherin ectodomains and a transmembrane region, while the constant region exons encode the common cytoplasmic region. These neural cadherin-like adhesion proteins are believed to play critical roles in establishing and maintaining specific cell-cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing events have been reported for the gamma cluster genes.
