Cystatin C는 type 2 cystatin superfamily에 속하며, 내인성(lysosomal cathepsins) 및 병원성 cysteine proteinase의 강력한 억제제입니다. 13 kDa의 분비 단백질로 모든 인간 핵세포에서 발현되며 생체액 내 고농도로 존재합니다. Cystatin C 수준 변화는 동맥경화증, 아밀로이드 혈관병증, 심근경색 등 다양한 심혈관 질환에서 보고되었습니다. 낮은 분자량 특성으로 신부전의 바이오마커로도 활용됩니다.
