Target Information
All cells within tissues are surrounded by an extracellular matrix (ECM) that provides shape and structure. The ECM is constantly remodeled, maintaining communication between cells. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are Zn(2+)-binding endopeptidases that degrade ECM components and regulate cell-matrix interactions. MMPs play key roles in tissue remodeling, wound healing, angiogenesis, and tumor invasion. Their activity is regulated by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which can suppress tumor cell invasion and act as metastasis suppressor genes.
