Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family, crucial for signal transduction and T cell activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, acting as a co-receptor for MHC-I molecules. In contrast, CD4 interacts with MHC-II. CD8 also appears as homodimers of CD8α on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes triggers Lck recruitment, leading to cytokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are key in eliminating pathogens and tumor cells. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
