Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays an essential role in signal transduction and T cell activation. CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules. It is also found on subsets of NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as homodimers of CD8α. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes induces Lck recruitment, promoting cytokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are critical for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naïve CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
