Target Information
Anti-sperm antibodies have been correlated with unexplained infertility, suggesting a role in fertilization blockage. Identification of sperm antigens is crucial for improved diagnosis and treatment of immunologic infertility and for developing targeted contraception.
The SPAG1 protein localizes to the plasma membrane of germ cells in the testis and the post-acrosomal plasma membrane of mature spermatozoa. It binds GTP and exhibits GTPase activity, indicating a role in GTP signal transduction pathways involved in spermatogenesis and fertilization.
Two transcript variants encode the same protein.
