Target Information
Defensins are a family of antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and found in mucosal epithelia such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif and several alpha defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8. Defensin alpha 5 is highly expressed in the secretory granules of Paneth cells in the ileum.
