GBE1는 glycogen branching enzyme으로, glycogen 사슬의 α-1,4-linked glucosyl unit을 α-1,6 위치로 이동시켜 가지를 형성합니다. 이 과정은 glycogen 분자의 용해도를 높이고 세포 내 삼투압을 줄이는 데 필수적입니다. 이 효소는 간과 근육에서 가장 높은 수준으로 발현되며, GBE1 유전자의 돌연변이는 glycogen storage disease IV (Andersen’s disease)와 관련이 있습니다.
