It plays a key role in myelin formation and maintenance, essential for efficient nerve impulse transmission. Mutations in EGR2 can lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease types 1D and 4E, or Dejerine-Sottas syndrome, which manifests in infancy or early childhood.
