Target Information
SLC4A4 encodes a sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC) involved in bicarbonate secretion, absorption, and intracellular pH regulation. It functions as an electrogenic cotransporter with a Na(+):HCO3(-) stoichiometry of 1:2 to 1:3. SLC4A4 may regulate bicarbonate flux at the basolateral membrane and maintain intracellular pH. Isoform 2 exhibits higher activity than isoform 1. Mutations in SLC4A4 are linked to proximal renal tubular acidosis and ocular abnormalities. Multiple transcript variants exist.
