Target Information
SPTAN1 (spectrin alpha chain, non-erythrocytic 1) belongs to the spectrin family of filamentous cytoskeletal proteins. These proteins serve as essential scaffolds that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. Spectrins are composed of alpha and beta dimers forming tetramers linked in a head-to-head arrangement.
SPTAN1 is also involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations in this gene are associated with early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
