Target Information
BAX is a member of the Bcl-2 family and plays an important role in the regulation of apoptosis. While Bcl-2 is considered anti-apoptotic, BAX promotes apoptosis. Apoptosis regulation involves homo- and heterodimerization of BAX and Bcl-2 isoforms.
The Bax gene encodes isoforms including Bax alpha (21 kDa) and Bax beta (24 kDa). Both contain BH1, BH2, and BH3 domains, but Bax beta lacks a hydrophobic transmembrane domain.
Bcl-2 also exists in different isoforms: Bcl-2 beta (22 kDa) differs from Bcl-2 alpha (26 kDa) in the 3′ UTR and coding region.
Overexpression of BAX promotes cell death through dimerization with other BCL-2 related proteins.
