Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing in translation start sites. The mitochondrial form undergoes N-terminal extension removal to match the cytoplasmic form. This enzyme functions as a homotetramer and shares similarity with thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can lead to fumarase deficiency and progressive encephalopathy.
