Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. B2M is also found freely in plasma.
The amino acid sequence of B2M is homologous to the constant regions of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains, forming a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure. It is ubiquitously expressed in the cytoplasm and plays roles in antigen processing, presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15. Mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2 microglobulin levels are useful in assessing renal function in kidney transplant recipients and may serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
