Target Information
This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase, which catalyzes ATP synthesis using an electrochemical proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane during oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP synthase consists of two linked multi-subunit complexes:
- F1: Soluble catalytic core (composed of α, β, γ, δ, and ε subunits; stoichiometry 3α, 3β, 1γ, 1δ, 1ε)
- Fo: Membrane-spanning proton channel (composed of a, b, c subunits)
This gene encodes the alpha subunit of the catalytic core.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 9, 2, and 16.
