Type I interferons (IFN-α and IFN-β) are structurally and functionally related proteins induced by viruses or double-stranded RNA, conferring antiviral states in cells.
They compete for binding to a common receptor, IFN-α/βR, which exists as two alternatively spliced transcripts—IFN-α/βR1 and IFN-α/βR2—both involved in signal transduction and ligand binding.
