Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths annually in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin Influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in patients from Mexico and the United States, rapidly spreading worldwide and leading to a pandemic declaration by WHO on June 11, 2009.
The Influenza A virus possesses one of sixteen Hemagglutinin (HA) and one of nine Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA facilitates viral attachment, while NA assists in viral release. These proteins elicit immune responses that can prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The 2009 swine flu H1N1 strain combined genetic material from human, swine, and avian influenza sources, along with Eurasian pig H3N2 genes. Its distinct antigenic properties compared with seasonal influenza A (H1N1) suggest limited human immunity, though older individuals may have partial protection.
