Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. Among species, mitoribosomal proteins differ significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS27 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may interact functionally with death associated protein 3 (DAP3).
