Target Information
Mitochondrial peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) is an essential component of the steroidogenic machinery, mediating cholesterol delivery to the inner mitochondrial cytochrome P-450 upon ligand activation.
PBR consists of three subunits: an isoquinoline binding site, a voltage-dependent anion channel, and an adenine nucleotide carrier.
It is evolutionarily conserved from bacteria to humans, with widespread expression in peripheral organs and mainly glial localization in the brain.
Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) inhibits Leydig cell steroidogenesis by reducing PBR mRNA stability, thereby suppressing PBR expression, cholesterol transport, and steroid formation.
A cytoplasmic protein, PRAX-1 (peripheral benzodiazepine receptor-associated protein 1), specifically interacts with PBR.
