Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a signal transducer shared by many cytokines, including interleukin 6 (IL6), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), and oncostatin M (OSM). It functions as part of the cytokine receptor complex, and its activation depends on cytokine binding. The viral IL6 protein (vIL6) from Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus can directly activate this protein, bypassing IL6R. Knockout studies in mice indicate its critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
