Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins located in the eukaryotic mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane. Three VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play a crucial role in cellular metabolism and the early stages of apoptosis, facilitating metabolite exchange (e.g., ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate) between cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may regulate apoptosis via redox activity.
