Target Information
Heterotrimeric G proteins relay information from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Each receptor detects specific extracellular stimuli such as photons, pheromones, odorants, hormones, or neurotransmitters, while effectors like adenyl cyclase generate intracellular messengers. In mammals, G protein α, β, and γ subunits are encoded by at least 16, 4, and 7 genes, respectively. Although α subunits have been the main focus due to their GTP-binding and hydrolysis activity, βγ subunits play a crucial regulatory role. Distinct G protein complexes expressed in different tissues contain structurally diverse subunits, and preferential associations among them enhance functional diversity.
