SLC1A6 encodes a sodium- and potassium-dependent glutamate transporter, belonging to the solute carrier family 1 (SLC1). EAATs are widely distributed throughout the brain, with five known subtypes, each exhibiting distinct distribution patterns.
This transporter mediates uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate. It functions as a symporter, co-transporting amino acids with Na⁺ and H⁺ ions, while counter-transporting K⁺ ions. SLC1A6 also facilitates Cl⁻ flux to prevent negative charge accumulation from aspartate and Na⁺ symport. It plays a crucial role in clearing glutamate from the synaptic cleft, terminating postsynaptic signaling.
