Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends, essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport. Microtubules also facilitate cell movement via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, minus ends are anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). GTP is required for tubulin heterodimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule polymerization is reversible and exhibits dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules and is encoded by multiple tubulin genes forming distinct classes (six in humans).
