Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are known, categorized into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is valuable for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. Keratin 14 is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
