Vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) is a multifunctional serum protein that binds to plasma membranes of numerous cell types and mediates diverse cellular functions. The DBP gene (also known as GC) is located on human chromosome 4q13.3.
DBP functions in organ-specific transportation of vitamin D and its metabolites within the endocrine system. It also exhibits immunomodulatory properties, binding to leukocyte surfaces and acting as a co-chemotactic factor for C5a.
Additionally, DBP binds globular actin with high affinity, contributing to actin clearance from the bloodstream and playing a role in osteoclast differentiation. These diverse functions depend on its cell surface binding capability.
