Armadillo-like proteins are characterized by a series of armadillo repeats, first defined in the Drosophila armadillo gene product, typically 42–45 amino acids long. These proteins are divided into subfamilies based on repeat number, sequence similarity, and distribution throughout their sequences. Members of the p120(ctn)/plakophilin subfamily—including CTNND1, Catenin delta-2, PKP1, PKP2, PKP4, and ARVCF—each possess 10 armadillo repeats (Bonne et al., 1998 [PubMed 9721216]).
