Target Information
IL-1α (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene located on chromosome 2q13 and signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1β.
IL-1α plays a key role in innate immunity by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses. Its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which inhibits receptor binding competitively.
This cytokine influences NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways, promotes IL6 and COX-2 expression, and enhances nitric oxide production. Elevated IL-1α levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
