Target Information
The degradation of glycine is carried out by the glycine cleavage system, composed of four mitochondrial protein components:
- P protein (glycine decarboxylase): pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme
- H protein: lipoic acid-containing protein
- T protein: tetrahydrofolate-requiring enzyme
- L protein: lipoamide dehydrogenase
GLDC encodes the P protein, which binds glycine and transfers the methylamine group to the T protein. Defects in this gene are associated with nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH).
