Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. These family members form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular activities. They are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of mitochondrial membrane channels (VDAC). This control affects mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — key events in apoptosis.
Alternative splicing of the BCL-X gene produces two isoforms: the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter isoform promotes apoptosis.
