Target Information
Thromboxane synthase encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and lipid synthesis. Although classified as a cytochrome P450 family member based on sequence similarity, its function differs. This endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein catalyzes the conversion of prostaglandin H2 to thromboxane A2, a potent vasoconstrictor and inducer of platelet aggregation. It plays roles in hemostasis, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
