Target Information
Epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) are amiloride-sensitive members of the Degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (Deg/ENaC) superfamily of ion channels. These channels possess two short intracellular termini, two transmembrane segments, and a large extracellular loop with a conserved cysteine-rich region.
ENaC isoforms (alpha, beta, gamma) are found in kidney, lung, and colon, playing a crucial role in sodium and fluid balance. ENaC also mediates aldosterone-dependent sodium reabsorption in the distal nephron, regulating blood pressure.
Mutations in ENaC subunits can cause disorders such as Liddels syndrome (gain-of-function) and pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA-1, loss-of-function).
