Target Information
CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (45–58 kDa) expressed on human T-lymphocytes and some NK cells, but not on B lymphocytes. It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, present on over 95% of thymocytes.
Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating CD2 functions as or associates with the erythrocyte receptor.
CD2 interacts with CD58 to stabilize adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting or target cells. Although the affinity between CD2 and CD58 is relatively low in solution, cell-cell contact enhances adhesion through increased CD2 expression and mobility upon T-cell activation.
CD2 deficiency has been linked to reduced intestinal inflammation and altered immune responses. Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penile squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymic absence.
