Target Information

This intronless gene likely originated by retrotransposition of fully processed PCBP-2 mRNA. PCBP1 and PCBP2 have paralogues arising from gene duplication events. The encoded protein is multifunctional and, together with PCBP2 and hnRNPK, forms major cellular polydomains involved in RNA binding.
PCBP1 and PCBP2 act as translational coactivators for poliovirus RNA via sequence-specific interaction with stem-loop IV of the IRES, promoting viral RNA replication.
Additionally, PCBP1 is implicated in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA. It also contributes to formation of an alpha-globin mRNP complex associated with alpha-globin mRNA stability.
