Target Information

Transgelin (also designated SM22alpha) is abundantly expressed in smooth muscle cells.
Transgelin-2 (also known as SM22alpha homolog) is a homolog of transgelin and is expressed in smooth muscle cells and by peritoneal B-1 cells.
The human transgelin-2 gene (TAGLN2), located on chromosome 1q23.1–q25, encodes a 199 amino acid protein containing a calponin-like repeat and a calponin-homology (CH) domain.
Transgelin-2 may function similarly to transgelin. During embryogenesis, transgelin is expressed in smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle, but later restricted to vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells with low heart expression.
Downregulation of transgelin has been observed in several transformed cell lines, suggesting it may serve as an early indicator of transformation onset.
Transgelin binds actin, causing actin fibers to gel within minutes of binding, with a binding ratio of 1:6 actin monomers.
