Mitochondrial ATP synthase catalyzes ATP synthesis utilizing a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane during oxidative phosphorylation.
The enzyme consists of two linked complexes:
- F1 (soluble catalytic core)
- Fo (membrane-spanning proton channel)
The catalytic portion comprises 5 subunits (α, β, γ, δ, ε) with a stoichiometry of 3α, 3β, and one each of the others.
The proton channel includes nine subunits (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, F6, and 8).
This gene encodes the b subunit of the proton channel.
