Target Information
DIABLO (Smac) is a mitochondrial protein that activates various forms of apoptosis, likely through neutralization of IAP family apoptosis inhibitory proteins.
During apoptosis, Smac exits the mitochondria and enters the cytosol. Mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis plays a crucial role in development and tissue homeostasis, and its dysregulation is linked to malignant disorders.
Upon apoptotic stimuli, mitochondrial proteins such as cytochrome c and Smac/DIABLO are released into the cytosol via distinct mechanisms. Smac/DIABLO also regulates cancer cell sensitization to apoptosis, both immune- and drug-induced.
