Target Information

Influenza viruses consist of three types (Influenza A, B, and C), which make up three of the five genera in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can affect both birds and mammals.
Influenza strains form roughly spherical particles and are similar in composition, with a viral envelope containing two main glycoproteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase), wrapped around the central core of the viral RNA genome and other proteins that package and protect the RNA.
Unusually for a virus, the influenza virus genome is segmented into seven to eight fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different viral proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe illness cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, rising to millions in pandemic years.
