Target Information
Connexin 46 (Cx46), also known as Gap Junction Protein Alpha-3 (GJA3), CAE3, CX46, and C2P3, maps to human chromosome 13q11–q12 and encodes a 46 kDa protein. Cx46, along with Cx50, is primarily expressed in the lens of the eye and mediates intercellular interactions during development. It is essential for the survival of neural crest cells and forms gap junctions connecting lens fiber cells, maintaining lens transparency and normal function. Mutations in Cx46 are associated with severe lens cataracts. The interaction between Cx46 and Cx50 is critical for proper lens fiber cell organization and differentiation.
