Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and signaling. It links the cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin to alpha-catenin, anchoring the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also interacts with adenomatous polyposis coli protein, microtubules, and signaling pathways including tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.
This protein regulates morphogenesis and is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and epithelial tissues. Abnormal beta-catenin activity is associated with pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes such as cyclin D and c-myc that drive cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
