Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making homology recognition difficult. The MRPS2 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S2 family. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed for this gene.
