Target Information
NGAL (Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, also known as lipocalin 2, siderocalin, or neutrophil lipocalin) is a 25 kDa glycosylated single chain monomer belonging to the lipocalin family. It binds and transports small lipophilic molecules and is released by activated neutrophils. NGAL can form dimers and higher oligomers, and complexes with matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9, gelatinase B). Expression in epithelia may increase under inflammatory or cancerous conditions. In kidneys, NGAL expression rises markedly following ischemic or nephrotoxic injury.
